Privacy Policy

We respect your privacy and collect minimal data.

Effective date: March 18, 2026
Last updated: March 18, 2026

TryCannabis.org is built on a privacy-first philosophy. We believe that people researching sensitive health topics should be able to do so without worrying about who is watching, what data is being collected, or where that data might end up.

This policy is written in plain language because we believe privacy policies should be understandable, not just legally defensible.

The Short Version

Our privacy commitment in one paragraph: We collect almost no data. We do not track you across the internet. We do not build profiles about you. We do not sell, share, or monetize your information. We do not use third-party analytics trackers. We do not require user accounts. The only cookies we use are functional ones necessary for the site to work properly, and we tell you exactly what each one does below.

What Data We Collect

TryCannabis.org collects the absolute minimum amount of data necessary to operate:

Data We Do Collect

  • Age verification response. When you first visit the site, you are asked to confirm that you are 21 or older. Your response is stored in a cookie on your device so that you are not asked again on subsequent visits. We do not record your age, date of birth, or any identifying information — only whether you confirmed you meet the age requirement.
  • Cookie consent preference. If you interact with our cookie consent banner, your preference (accepted or declined) is stored in a cookie so we can respect your choice on future visits.
  • Basic server logs. Like virtually all web servers, ours automatically logs basic request data including your IP address, browser type, referring page, and pages visited. These logs are used solely for security monitoring (detecting attacks, preventing abuse) and are automatically deleted after 30 days. They are never used for analytics, profiling, or marketing.

Data We Do Not Collect

  • We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party tracking scripts.
  • We do not require or offer user accounts. There is no registration, no login, and no password to manage.
  • We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or any personally identifiable information through normal site use.
  • We do not use fingerprinting, local storage tracking, or any other techniques to identify individual visitors.
  • We do not serve targeted advertisements or participate in ad networks.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your web browser. TryCannabis.org uses only functional cookies — meaning cookies that are necessary for the site to work as intended. We do not use advertising, tracking, or analytics cookies.

Here is a complete list of every cookie TryCannabis.org sets:

Cookie Name Purpose Expiration Type
tc_age_verified Stores your age verification confirmation so you are not asked to verify on every visit. Contains only a "yes" or "no" value. 30 days Functional (required)
tc_cookie_consent Records your response to the cookie consent banner so we can respect your preference and not show the banner repeatedly. 365 days Functional (required)

That is the complete list. If you ever see a cookie from TryCannabis.org that is not listed above, something is wrong and we want to know about it — please contact us at privacy@trycannabis.org.

No Analytics Tracking

TryCannabis.org does not currently use any analytics platform. We do not track which pages you visit, how long you spend on them, where you came from, or where you go when you leave. We do not collect aggregate usage statistics.

If we add privacy-respecting analytics in the future (such as a self-hosted, cookie-free analytics tool), this privacy policy will be updated to reflect that change before any analytics are implemented.

No Data Selling

We do not sell, rent, lease, trade, or otherwise provide your personal information to any third party. Period. This is not a conditional statement with carve-outs for "trusted partners" or "service providers." We do not share your data.

Third-Party Services

TryCannabis.org minimizes the use of third-party services. Where we do use them, they are limited to:

  • Web hosting. Our site is hosted on shared hosting infrastructure. Our hosting provider may process basic server request data as described above. We select hosting providers that maintain reasonable security and privacy practices.
  • Content Delivery Network (CDN). We may use a CDN to serve static assets (stylesheets, fonts, images) for faster page loading. CDNs may process your IP address to route content from the nearest server. No tracking or profiling is performed through our CDN use.

We do not embed social media trackers, advertising scripts, or third-party widgets that collect data about our visitors.

CCPA Compliance (California Residents)

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), California residents have specific rights regarding their personal information. Here is how those rights apply to TryCannabis.org:

  • Right to know. You have the right to know what personal information we collect. This page tells you everything: age verification response, cookie consent preference, and basic server logs. That is the complete list.
  • Right to delete. You have the right to request deletion of your personal information. You can delete our cookies from your browser at any time. Server logs are automatically deleted after 30 days.
  • Right to opt out of sale. We do not sell personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of.
  • Right to non-discrimination. We will not treat you differently for exercising your privacy rights.

GDPR Compliance (EU/EEA Visitors)

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), visitors from the European Union and European Economic Area have additional rights. Here is how they apply:

  • Lawful basis. Our use of functional cookies is based on legitimate interest (the site cannot function properly without age verification). Our cookie consent mechanism allows you to be informed about cookie use.
  • Right of access. You have the right to request a copy of any personal data we hold about you. Given our minimal data collection, this would be limited to any server log entries containing your IP address (if they have not yet been automatically deleted).
  • Right to erasure. You can request deletion of your data. Clear your browser cookies to remove locally stored data. Server logs are automatically purged after 30 days.
  • Right to data portability. You have the right to receive your data in a portable format. Given the minimal data we collect, this right has limited practical application here.
  • Data transfers. TryCannabis.org is hosted in the United States. If you visit from the EU/EEA, basic server request data (IP address) is processed in the US. No additional personal data is transferred.

Children's Privacy

TryCannabis.org is intended exclusively for adults aged 21 and older. We do not knowingly collect any information from anyone under the age of 21. Our age verification gate is the first thing visitors encounter, and visitors who do not confirm they are 21 or older are not granted access to site content.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "last updated" date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, display a notice on the site for a reasonable period. We will never retroactively reduce your privacy protections without clear notice and, where required by law, your consent.
